Juvenile Championships

Leixlip got off to the best possible start in their juvenile championship campaign with a one hundred per cent success rate in their five opening games against Laois over the weekend 11th-13th February. Lack of competitive experience told very much against the Laois players but nonetheless Leixlip can take much heart from all the encounters and in particular from the performance of championship debutants, Niamh Masterson and Sorcha Tiernan in U/12 Doubles. Next Sunday's quarter-finals are likely to provide a stiffer challenge for the Leixlip representatives, with the boys in particular likely to face formidable opposition at a number of age levels.

Results v. Laois
U/12 Doubles: Sorcha Tiernan/ Niamh Masterson dft. Shannon Murphy/Róisín Kelly 15-3; 10-15; 15-1
U/13 Singles: Saoirse Sunderland dft. Mikayla Kelly 15-2;10-1[inj.]
U/12 S: Kal Cribben dft. Padraig Delaney 15-5; 15-9
U/14 D: Hannh Dagg/Áine O'Keeffe dft.Eimear Delaney/ Leah Dunphy 15-1; 15-0
U/15 D: Kate Dagg/Ciara Diggins dft. Rachel Delahunty/Niamh Dunne 15-1; 15-3

Leixlip's great run of success continued last week with a further seven victories on the trot - this time over Dublin opposition - in the home court and in Croke Park. Highlights of what must now be an unprecedented sequence of victories in provincial competition was the performances of talented debutant, Leah Doyle, at U/12 Singles and the gritty recovery of Jack Tobin and Kevin Diggins to snatch victory in the U/13 Doubles for Boys. All thirteen Leixlip participants will expect to be in action next weekend at semi- final or final stage where they can be sure that whatever success is achieved will be much more hard-earned than was the case over the weekend just past.

Another Leinster for Niall

Niall O'Connor bagged the club's first major trophy of the year when he overcame old adversary, Keith Kavanagh (Wicklow), in the Leinster Minor 40x20 final in Tinryland, Carlow on Wednesday 16th February. This was a tough, tense affair with Niall once again have to come from the jaws of defeat to underline his claim to being top of the heap among a number of talented young players in the province. The Leixlip man took the first game with assurance and authority on a 21-12 scoreline but, as as happened on previous occasions, a level of complacency appeared to set in and Kavanagh gradually took control and went on to a 21-12 win. The tie-break game was a war of attrition with both players going all out to secure advantage. Niall made most of the breaks but at 14-all it was the Wicklow man who upped his game and surged to what appeared to a match-winning 19-14 lead. However, the final tension-packed minutes saw the real mettle of the Leixlip star when he reasserted his earlier dominance to claim the next seven scores to take the game and the title on a 2-19 scoreline.
